Squirtypants’ reading has improved ten fold in the last six months. Wednesday after Dance Camp I took her to the Knitting Room and showed her how to knit.

She did a really good job and learned quite quickly. Cowboy analogy helped (We yelled YAHOO everytime she “lassoed” a new stitch with the working yarn).

Making little videos each time she completed a row helped too.

Awesome Jocelyn’s Geeky Nerd Approach to Budgeting

First, a bit of housekeeping: “Fix Blog” has been in my file of denial and procrastination for some time. I need to sit down and take study the CSS Zoe the Wonderkid set up and adjust it to my preferences. In the meantime it’s a little difficult to look at (at least for me) so I changed it back to a generic wordpress theme.

I’ve had a few requests for my Budget Spreadsheet. It’s designed to do three things: (a) Follow the wealth (hardy har) of financial planning advice I’ve received;
Ease of use, especially for my random abstract self; (infact, if you’re a linear thinker you may choose to look away)
Clearly identify where I was according to my budgety goals.

Here’s the spreadsheet (opens in google docs. If that doesn’t work leave a comment & I’ll email it to you)

This spreadsheet is designed into three different sheets:

Daily, Weekly and Monthly; All three are cross referenced to automatically tabulate information you enter. Now, I designed it to track my daily spending (per financial advice) figure out where I was nickle & dimeing myself to death. I believe Oprah calls this this the “latte” factor.

Each sheet cross references individual line items that I designed to work for me. You create your own. You’ll only need to change the line items in the “daily” category once, and they’ll automatically update the “weekly” & “monthly” sheet. Ibid for the “Monthly Bills” section in the “Weekly” sheet.

The Daily sheet

“Daily” sheet was designed to be a prime interface. It tracks every dime I spent on out-of-pocket. Categories are Day to Day (coffee, groceries, snacks, etc) FDS*, Household, etc.

You only need to enter the numbers into the spreadsheet once. The spreadsheet will automatically tabulate and do all the maths for you.

This is an excellent place to start your own budget. Track your daily spending for 4 – 6 weeks and design your budget based on the data you collect.

Note: I set this up to go from Wednesday to Tuesday, because that’s what worked best for me.

*FDS Joce-code for Fun Daydreamy Stuff. The stuff you I love to B-U-Y, or save for . The optional, non-mandatory items that make you happy. Be sure and budget for impulse purchases!

The Weekly sheet

The only information you need to enter into the Weekly sheet are:
Any income you receive; Calculations will automatically show you how much cash you have left. I know. Brilliant.
This is where you enter your actual budget numbers into the “projected” column – how much you anticipate spending on your line items. Again, the numbers will automatically calculate where your spending is against your goals.

I added “Monthly Bills” to the weekly sheet, because it helped me reference what bill was due what week of my budget period. Because the calculations automatically deduct any “projected” expenses from my income, it served as an easy reference to see how much cash was on hand at any given time during my budget period.

Monthly sheet – Is an easy one-page reference to see where you’re at in your budget. Simple.

I hope you find this spreadsheet as easy to use as I have. It’s a tool I’ve used to become very successful in meeting my budgeting goals. If you want to really geek out, you can create a thermometer style bar graph that shows how close you are to saving for a down payment, pay off credit card, etc. Good times.

Please don’t resdistribute this spreadsheet. It’s my baby and I’d really prefer you direct ppl to my blog instead. If you have any questions or catch any oopsies in it, please leave a comment below.

Pink Chalk Fabrics

July 23rd, 2009

I received a lovely present to myself today from a fabric store named “Pink Chalk Shop” I recently learned of Pink Chalk from my friend, Chawne, who is an absolutely magical quilter.

Pink Chalk calls Washington state home and their moto is “Fabric, Cloth & tools for modern sewists”. I continue to be impressed with how much the fabric industry has contemporized since I learned to sew in 2002. I was super delighted with my first purchase from Pink Chalk for a number of reasons, namely:

1. They have a delightful selection of fabrics. Their selection of japanese fabric prints is the icing on the delight cupcake. Of course, this is not unlike other retailers.

1a. I ordered 4 fabrics and they were even better in person! Fabric in general is a much safer bet than yarn, but sometimes you order stuff online and receive it and think: “oooh, it looks like THAT”. Not the case here my friends.

1b. Pink fabric with brown owls. SQUEE!

Things that are Cauchy's fault.

2. The service, oh! The service. I received my fabric in a record setting four days! They charged me $5.50 (American retailers have been known to hose hosers.)

I’m really excited to have discovered them and they’re having a sale until 7.27. Go forth and shop!

I had a really bad experience with an American fabric retailer in the Spring (click through the photo below for details on flickr), and I’m more than happy to give Pink Chalk my business (like they’re doing me a huge favour I am a AAA grade fabric whore)

What’s this blog about anyway?

July 17th, 2009

If this blog had a byline it would be:

“30-something SWF who crafts, has cats and …” ?

That question mark is going to become really, really big and I’m going to try and capture it here.

And on Flickr of course.

I still knit, of course, but lately I’ve been pre-occupied with fabrics. I’ve been spending alot (LOT) of time at the fabric store.

This little number is an ironing board. I made it with fabric I picked up in Kaslo two summers ago, intending to frame it and hang it on my wall.

This is way better. I used a piece of heat-proof fill, a piece of corkboard and put it all together in about an hour. Cost (including fabric) less than $15? The best part is it’s the same size exactly as my cutting mat so I can tuck it in behind it for easy storage.

It brings together all my flea market finds perfectly and catalysed a whole re-do of my craft room. More pics to come!

New Blog, and a winner

March 13th, 2009

A few months ago I asked my girl Zoe to redesign my blog for me. She’s an extremely talented artists who edges out a living doing graphics and web-based work. She’s one of my favourite little sisters ever, and I can’t wait for the day to come when she’s famous for creating something that changes the way the world thinks, and I can say “I knew her when”.

What do you think? It needs a touch of tweaking here and there, but I love her work. You can see more at her (WIP) site here

I apologize for the lateness of announcing the contest winner. As Zoe’s been tweaking my blog I’ve been staying away. Also, I’ve been:

Playing with babies:

Obsessing over Canada Reads

Locked in the Bathroom
1.25.09 An Undramatic Reinactment (long story there)

I’ve been quilting again!

and doing a bit of stitchin’:

And not much knitting, though I expect to correct that this weekend.

Anywho, there were 18 (!) comments entered into the chicken hat, of which I am randomly drawing one right now, and it is…

Number 6! Which is….
OMG! Terra! How exciting! Terra and I have been floating in the same circles for a couple years, and she’s been really supportive and INCREDIBLY helpful with my recent commitment to develop a Yoga practice for myself. I’m so excited! Yay Terra!!
